Safer roads in Ireland with Connected Vehicles milestone
Ireland’s Network Intelligence and Management System (NIMS) initiative has announced the launch of a Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) pilot project aimed at improving traffic safety. Since January 2024, C-ITS technology has been fully integrated into NIMS, enhancing real-time communication for road users. This pilot involves 1,500 public participants and is operational on Dublin’s M50 and M1 motorways.
Through this initiative, drivers will receive immediate notifications about collisions, congestion, roadworks, and adverse weather conditions via in-vehicle screens. Carolin Treichl, EVP EMENA at Kapsch TrafficCom, emphasized the project's goal to transform Ireland's motorway network by allowing seamless data exchange between vehicles, infrastructure, and traffic authorities. The project is backed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Irish Government.
According to Minister of State Jack Chambers, this technology will enable motorists to make informed decisions, potentially avoiding road hazards and improving general road safety. Kapsch TrafficCom, involved in the NIMS project since 2020, plays a vital role in this endeavor with a financial commitment in the low double-digit million range.
