South Star Achieves Battery Grade Purity in BamaStar Graphite Project
South Star Battery Metals Corp. has successfully upgraded its BamaStar natural flake graphite concentrate to 99.95% fixed carbon. This purity level is suitable for lithium-ion batteries and various other value-added applications. The company achieved this using a chemical purification process in partnership with Dorfner Anzaplan GMBH.
The results will be incorporated into a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) scheduled for release in September 2024. This milestone furthers South Star’s strategy to produce high-quality graphite concentrates from the Santa Cruz Graphite Mine in Brazil starting in 2024, targeting diverse industrial sectors. Concurrently, technical development programs aim to advance midstream and downstream products for commercial sales by Q4 2026.
Multiple kilograms of BamaStar graphite, averaging 93.47% carbon content, were purified to 99.95% at Anzaplan’s lab. These results demonstrate the feasibility of upgrading the material for a wide range of battery and industrial applications. Ongoing tests aim to further optimize the process.
The purification is part of a larger strategy to meet the growing demand for battery-grade graphite in secure jurisdictions, with alternative production locations in the Americas and Europe. South Star remains committed to its commercial strategy of producing value-added graphite products with viable, scalable technologies.
