South Star Nears Completion of Santa Cruz Graphite Mine Phase 1
South Star Battery Metals Corp. has substantially completed Phase 1 construction of its Santa Cruz Graphite Mine in Bahia, Brazil. The project, expected to produce 12,000 tonnes per year of natural flake graphite, is scheduled for commissioning by September 2024. Initial ore placement of approximately 50,000 tonnes will be completed by August.
The plant's key facilities, including primary and secondary crushing, floatation, screening plants, tailings systems, and concentrate dewatering, are all nearing readiness. Internal power and support infrastructures are also substantially complete, with powerline installations pending final grid connections by COELBA.
Commissioning of the different plant areas is projected to span 6-7 weeks, setting the stage for the transition to commercial production. South Star aims to fulfill initial purchase orders by Q4 2024.
The Santa Cruz Graphite Mine represents a significant milestone, making South Star the second largest natural flake graphite producer in the Americas. Long-term plans include advancements into vertically integrated products and battery-grade graphite for the Li-ion market with commercial sales targeted for Q4 2026.
