The STARLight project: A European breakthrough in silicon photonics
The STARLight project, led by STMicroelectronics, promises to position Europe at the forefront of 300mm silicon photonics technology. With a consortium of 24 companies and universities from 11 European Union countries, the project aims to develop a high-volume production line and innovative solutions for key sectors such as data centers, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and automotive.
STARLight addresses major technical challenges, including high-speed modulation and laser integration. The project also explores new materials, seeking to combine low-power capabilities with time and dimensional efficiency of devices. By 2028, it strives to develop advanced application solutions.
The STARLight project is supported by the EU CHIPS Joint Undertaking, underscoring Europe's ambition to become a leader in this key technology. Collaboration between renowned players ensures the successful integration of photonics innovations to meet the emerging needs of the digital industry.
