TE H2 and VERBUND Partner on Green Hydrogen Project in Tunisia
Paris/Tunis, May 28th, 2024 – TE H2, a joint-venture between TotalEnergies and EREN Groupe, along with Austria’s leading electricity company VERBUND, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Republic of Tunisia to explore the "H2 Notos" green hydrogen project. This initiative targets the export of green hydrogen to Central Europe via pipelines.
H2 Notos will use electrolysers powered by large onshore wind and solar projects, utilizing desalinated seawater. The project aims for an initial annual production of 200,000 tons of green hydrogen, with potential scalability to one million tons per year in South Tunisia. The hydrogen will reach Europe through the “SoutH2 Corridor”, expected to be operational around 2030, connecting North Africa to Italy, Austria, and Germany.
TE H2 and VERBUND will manage the development, financing, construction, and operation of the project. VERBUND will oversee the hydrogen transport to Central Europe. David Corchia, CEO of TE H2, emphasized the importance of the MOU with Tunisia and the project's potential for green hydrogen supply and job creation.
Tunisia’s Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, highlighted the strategic importance of this agreement for Tunisia’s energy transition. VERBUND CEO Michael Strugl stressed Tunisia's role in scalable and competitive hydrogen production as part of VERBUND's plans to supply green hydrogen to Europe.
