Vicat Finalizes Cooperative Agreement with US DOE for Lebec Net Zero Project
The Vicat Group has finalized an agreement with the US Department of Energy (DOE) for the Lebec Net Zero (LNZ) project. This initiative includes a CO2 capture, transport, and storage system in its California cement plant, developed by National Cement Company of California Inc, a Vicat subsidiary.
The DOE will fund up to 50% of the project's phase 1 investment, capped at $500 million. The LNZ project aims to reduce emissions by approximately 950,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, effectively achieving carbon-neutral cement production.
The LNZ project will also enhance the use of alternative fuels from local biomass and innovate cement production with calcined clays. A preliminary engineering study and community advisory formation will launch the first phase, progressing until Q1 2026.
