Vietnam's Continued Commitment to Combat IUU Fishing

Vietnam is undertaking significant measures to eliminate the 'IUU yellow card' issued by the European Commission, aiming for its swift removal. Following a recent inspection, the Vietnamese government has focused on stricter enforcement of fishing regulations, aiming to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

This involves rectifying management shortcomings, with a focus on regulating vessel management and curbing IUU violations. Measures include enhanced administrative enforcement, improved seafood traceability, and stricter penalties for non-compliance. Authorities also monitor fishing operations via extensive vessel monitoring systems.

Efforts include electronic systems for legal seafood tracking and monitoring, both domestic and imported. Vietnam has identified and registered nearly 85,000 vessels, with compliance measures in place for the majority. Significant legal actions and fines have been deployed, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable fisheries and improved global standing.
