WestJet Partners with FLYHT and NOAA to Improve Weather Forecasting in North America
FLYHT Aerospace Solutions Ltd. has announced a collaboration with WestJet Airlines and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to enhance weather forecasting and prediction of severe weather in North America. The partnership focuses on providing NOAA with real-time humidity, temperature, and wind data from Pacific routes.
WestJet will equip three Boeing 737 MAX and two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft with FLYHT's weather solutions, including FLYHT-WVSS-II sensors. These sensors will monitor environmental conditions during flights and transmit data to NOAA, filling coverage gaps and improving forecast accuracy.
This initiative aims to provide NOAA with essential atmospheric data, particularly in data-sparse regions over the Pacific Ocean. This area is known for phenomena like the "Atmospheric River" which can result in severe weather in the Western U.S. Improved forecasts will benefit public safety and water resource management.
Initial hardware installations are expected to begin in early 2025, funded by a $500,000 grant awarded to FLYHT in September 2023.
